7/7/14: 'Serenity' Genghis Con 2014 Single Mini 3rd Place Winner

Hey folks!

So while digging through some pictures of older projects, I came across pictures of one of my Genghis Con 2014 entries I'd shown a couple pictures of, but never dedicated a blogpost to!

The final project ended up getting a sculpy plaque on the front that says 'Serenity'; that also got a butterfly to tie it into the rest of the project.

The model is Norbit from Ammon Miniatures, while the plinth is from Secret Weapon Miniatures. The butterflies are all handmade from paper which was painted orange then detailed with a fine detail brush.

The drool coming from his mouth is hotglue. I heated the gun, then put a small dab on my desk lamp and pulled down, stretching the glue. As it dried, I found the perfect bubbles and drips, trimmed them with an xacto, then glued them in place.

I tried a tarnished steel NMM effect; not perfect, but it did its job!

The base was done with a mix of paints and weathering powders. The skull is from a GW kit, and the tufts were added at the end to avoid any weird coloring!

This bad boy won me a 3rd Place award at Genghis Con 2014; I ended up bringing home four awards for four different projects this year, so its time to take my game to the next level and bring home some firsts!

Alrighty! I'll be back in the studio tomorrow, where I'll be finishing up lots of Daemons and getting ready to rock out some Wraithknights! Picked up a box of these bad boys too, so expect more Nurgle work too!

Hey guys!

Been a lot of daemonic forces crossing the paint table over the last couple of weeks, both commission and personal! I'll share my new Nurgle guys soon but, for now, this post is for the commissioned group! This group consisted of:

  • Skarbrand (Made from the FW Bloodthirster)
  • Skull Cannon of Khorne (WHFB Hellcannon conversion)
  • 28 Daemonettes (The old Juan Diaz ones!)
  • Daemon Prince of Slaaneshi/Keeper of Secrets (Raging Heroes Asharah model)
  • 2 FW Renegade Psykers

Enough chit chat though, pictures!

Skarbrand! I received the model with an average paintjob. My client had me clean him up, rebase him, tarnish the wings, and sculpt a new axe.

I tarnished the brass with Nihlakh Oxide; it really compliments the red skintone and the green eyes.

The axe was built with cardstock, plasticard, and greenstuff. Not my best sculpting job, but it works!

The wings were tarnished with a dremel tool, and the edges were greenstuffed to show the old torn leather hanging off. The wings weren't totally destroyed so my client can run him as Skarbrand, a stock Bloodthirster, or Angraath.

The Juan Diaz Daemonettes. These were all secondhand models; they were stripped, rebased, and cleaned up rather nicely!

Just wonderful models!

That's a lot of death right there....

The first renegade psyker. Really creepy model, he painted up really quickly and to good effect!

Even threw a little script on the back for extra detail!

This is the second time I've gotten to paint this model, so it was really nice to come back and play with it again.

Even went for a skull tearing effect to really make the psyker look desperate.

The Skull Cannon of Khorne! Really interesting conversion, the hounds are Barghests from Puppets War, the cannon is a Hellcannon from Fantasy, and the rider is from the Chaos Warshrine!

Wanted to go for a glowing blood look, complimented with the greens of the rest of the army.

TO WAR!

The Slaaneshi Daemon Prince! I'm sure she'd double nicely as a Keeper of Secrets too! The model is the limited edition Asharah model from Raging Heroes with the Terminator Lord familiar on the base.

The reds tie her back into the Word Bearers, as does the green on the book. Even opted for some tattoos and streaks in the hair to add to the Slaaneshi feel.

The pictures don't show it, but the Daemonettes also got flames on their loinclothes. I feel this really added needed detail to the model, and looks great too!

And the little familiar! The client had wanted to use the hand holding the book on the Daemon Prince, but preferred the sword and lash, so I still tried to work the book into the model!

And the finished group!

The Daemons of Slaanesh clash with Nurgle's chosen!

Alrighty! Next up are a trio of Wraithknights, more Imperial Knights, some Necrons, and another addition to the first Legio Titanicus commission I completed back in May! Will have some pictures of my new Nurgle daemons too! Whew!

Stay tuned and keep painting!

Howdy folks!

I didn't get a chance to share my new Nurgle projects this week, but fret not! I'll get a post up on them next week at some point, I promise! In return, though, I blew through the latest commission to cross the painting desk and, boy, is this one a doozy! I've never had the misfortune to play against a Wraithknight (Toughness 8 and 6 Wounds?! Really?!), but I can't imagine playing against THREE! My Alpha Legion army wouldn't have a good answer for it, my old Guard would have had some issues, and my newest Nurgle force would still have their work cut out for them! Ahem...but I digress....enough chitchat, pictures!

The dirty trio in all their glory! The client has a deck-of-cards theme to his army; lots of harlequins with off-white, red, and black motifs. I was able to work this into each Knight by subtly theming each one to a suite; Diamond, Spade, and Hearts.

As you can see, every option is magnetized. Wanna go crazy and run three Ghostglaive/Scattershield Wraithknights?! Go for it! Suncannons all around? Of course! All the magnets are consistent across all three models, so no need to keep track of each set either!

A shot of the bases before the Wraithknights were attached. My client's main opponent is a Children of Torment army (Slaanesh Black Legion), so he wanted them scattered across his bases.

'Diamonds' in all his badass glory!

There's a gentle reflection effect done on his faceplate, and his pose, like all of them, evoke a look of urgency and attack.

Love how his interaction with the base turned out!

'Hearts' braces for another shot!

You can see the heart on the faceguard to designate him from the other two.

Those poor Terminators took some clean headshots, probably from the hiding group of Pathfinders. They're always a pain to find...

More freehanding for the Black Legion symbols!

And 'Spades', his left leg was cut and reposed to give him the appearance of leaping back from a missed enemy shot or attack.

The checkering, I should point out, was done with a sharp blade and painter's tape. A general diamond pattern was cut out, and each individual piece was attached to the primed plate (black or red). Once affixed, they were sprayed with the airbrush the correct color, waited upon to dry, then carefully removed! Voila!

Little extra freehanding on his shoulderplate too!

Aww, that poor Aspiring Champion almost made it to Daemonhood....and no, he doesn't have two Chainfists, those Chaos Bayonets are crazy long...

Man, I had a lot of fun with this project! The client and I have been in talks about doing some Titans in the future so, fingers crossed, a Revenant or Phantom will cross the workbench!

Alrighty! Next up are a whole mess of Imperial Knights, including one for Carl over at The Independent Characters which will be really cool, as well as more alternate Necrons, Nurgle Daemons, more zombies than you can shake a stick at, and an add-on to the Legio Metalica/House Raven commission I completed back in May. Looking forward to painting a Knight Lancer!

Also, Smells Like Wargaming will be moving house again the final week of July, so expect a minor delay in updates. I'm finally making my big move up to Denver with my girlfriend, which I'm incredibly excited for. I'm also going to have my own studio (!!!!) and be closer to more stores and conventions, so if anyone's in the Denver area, feel free to hit me up and maybe we can get a game in!

Things are heating up!

Howdy folks!

First off, I apologize for the lack of updates the last couple of weeks. I've just completed my big move, and am now located in Denver! I've been checking out a couple of stores in the area too, so be sure to drop me a line if anyone wants a game, to chat, or get a commission done!

I've been working my butt off too! Just got internet back yesterday, so I've got a HUGE backlog of pictures to post! Lets start with the most recent one though; a duo of Knight Titans, House Raven scheme, with a modified theme around Cervantes' literary work 'Don Quixote'. Enough blather though, lets jump right to pictures!

The heroic duo!

The first is 'Quixote'; he was supplied assembled, so the only things magnetized are the feet to the base.

His heraldry is a Necron Powermill, which was freehanded onto his tilting plate and his shoulderpad.

The Necron theme also continues onto his base!

The second knight is 'Cervantes'; I opted to run his name down the length of his carapace, rather than the front, due to spacing issues.

His heraldry is a chalice made from the converted heraldry of House Raven, full of blood to represent the lives he's responsible for protecting.

Both knights have a little extra detail on the back of their tabards for that extra touch!

And the bases! You can see the simplicity of the magnets to hold everything in place! The client also wanted dinosaur skulls on the bases; a throwback to their fluff in Rogue Trader as essentially giant herders of livestock!

Quick, easy, and looking good!

Lots of fun with this commission, the knights have been rolling in! I've got another to show off tomorrow, as well a trio coming soon and a Knight Lancer and bodyguard to accompany the Legio Titanicus commission I did back in May. Getting a lot of work done on the Nurgle Daemons too I need to show off, so be sure to stay tuned, there's a lot coming down the pipeline!

Hey folks!

As promised, more pictures of what I've been working on the last couple of weeks (for those of you who DONT follow my Facebook and Twitter!). For those of you who don't know, I've been a sponsor of The Independent Characters for nearly three years now. They're easily the best 40k gaming podcast available right now, and the fact they're over 100 episodes now proves that! On episode 104, Carl mentioned he had a Knight Titan sitting in a box and needed to get some paint on it! I dropped him an email and, soon after, the Knight was sitting in my studio instead! Enough chatter though, lets show it off!
\

The Scheme is a modified Hawkshroud scheme with a Howling Griffons scheme and insignia. GW doesn't make the decals for the griffin shoulderpad anymore, so it was up to some trick freehanding work to get it done!

And Carl's completed Knight in all its glory!

The yellow turned out really nicely. It was based with brown and grey to create initial shading, then sprayed white. Once the white was dry, it was sprayed with yellow to get the smooth look you see here!

The freehanded griffin symbol! I'm incredibly happy with how this turned out, as was Carl!

The decal work really makes these models, as it breaks up the huge tracts of color and adds detail.

The Berserker helmets were added to tie into Carl's World Eaters army!

You can see the metallics were tinted purple to tie back into the yellow and red. Thats Color Theory folks!

And both guns are magnetized for total optimization!

I had a lot of fun with this one, so much that I may do a Hawkshroud Knight for my own personal collection next, but we'll see!

Alrighty, next up is a Nurgle Daemons showcase, as well as more Knights and some Necrons! Stay tuned!

Howdy folks!

Its been quite a bit since I posted anything over here! Its not because I haven't been busy, I've just been neglecting the blog! Bad Smells Like Wargaming! Bad!

This time though, I took a little time to paint up an army I've had sitting in boxes for a couple of years. I got the better part of a Grey Knights army from my buddy Magilla Gurilla when he was getting out of 40k. With grand plans and ideas...they sat on the shelf...and sat...then moved to a box...then sat some more. But no longer! This army consists of:

  • Kaldor Draigo
  • Castellan Crowe
  • Brotherhood Champion
  • Grey Knights Librarian in Terminator Armor
  • Nemesis Dreadknight with Greatsword and Heavy Psycannon.
  • One 5 man Purifier Squad with two halberds, a Daemonhammer, and two Psycannons.
  • One 5 man Purgation Squad with a halberd and 4 incinerators.
  • Two 5 man Strike Squads with three halberds, 1 Daemonhammer, and a Psycannon.
  • 1 Razorback, perfect for the Purifiers and Crowe (Who is finally an IC!)
Enough chatter though, pictures!

The entire army in all its glory! Sorry for the washout on the Dreadknight, couldn't use the lightbox on that shot!

Brotherhood Champion, done using the Emperor's Champion model with some added bits. Perfect for both small and large point games!

Castellan Crowe, such a beautiful model to work on!

The big daddy himself, Lord Kaldor Draigo! This is the old pewter one too, so no worries on Finecast issues!

Both Crowe and Draigo have their names painted on the back of their cloaks!

The Librarian. Changed his hand from the pistol to a psychic-casting one from the Terminators box.

The Nemesis Dreadknight! Love this model, he's now a beast and perfect for ending your opponent's flying circus of Daemons!

Can't go wrong with a giant sword of death!

First five Terminators/Paladins. The squad is entirely tricked out so Draigo and the Librarian can join with them in Daemonic destruction!

Lots of fun with the faces!

And the other five paladins!

The Banner can represent the Brotherhood Banner or the new relic banner in the book!

Purgation Squad, complete with incinerators galore! They're painted to match the Strike Squads too, so you can swap out Psycannons for Incinerators as your heart pleases!

Every sergeant has freehanding of some kind on their back banner!

Also included are two psilencers, in case you'd prefer to swap them into any of the squads!

Purifiers in all their glory! These guys are designed to join Crowe in the Razorback, and their white gear and white back banner help distinguish them from your Strike Squads.

Speaking of their Razorback! The turret still moves up, down, and rotates, while the Storm Bolter is in place.

Strike Squad #1!

And Strike Squad #2!

Uh oh, the Daemons have shown up! They're still no match for the Emperor's finest though!

I'm asking $1200 OBO for the army, and the eBay listing can be found HERE! You can contact me at SmellsLikeWargaming at hotmail dot com if interested or want more details! I do ship internationally too! Be sure to add this powerful force to your collection today and give them a loving, daemon-banishing home today!

Whew! Alrighty, next up are Necrons and Mechanicus-themed Knight Titans, so I've got my work cut out for me!

Stay tuned!

Howdy folks!

Been chugging away on commissions and projects, and this time, we've got a huge Necron army to show off! Over 2500 points of Necron goodness, the project consisted of:

  • Trazyn the Infinite
  • Necron Lord/Overlord with Warscythe and Resurrection Orb
  • 40 Necron Warriors
  • 20 Lychguard; 10 with Warscythes, 10 with Hyperphase Sword/Dispersion Shield
  • 10 Immortals
  • 2 Ghost Arks
  • 3 Canoptek Spyders
  • 6 Canoptek Wraiths
  • 12 Canoptek Scarab Swarms
  • C'Tan Shard
  • Command/Annihilation Barge
Enough talk though, lets show these bad boys off!

Trazyn the Infinite; my favorite model in the Necron range!

Can't go wrong with a stock Lord/Overlord either!

Two blocks of 20 Necron Warriors! Good luck getting them off the tabletop!

20 Lychguard, had a lot of fun doing both variants!

10 Immortals!

Two Ghost Arks, ready to ferry their Warrior cargo to war!

Three Canoptek Spyders; had a lot of fun with these models, and added some variety by mixing pieces with the Wraith kit!

Speaking of Wraiths! The group of 3 Wraiths; again, heads mixed with the Spyders to allow for extra variation and menace!

And the other three Wraiths! Lots of fun with these models, especially the back carapace!

You can't have Spyders without Scarabs!

The spyders are already working away!

And the Barge! The Gun mount and the plinth are interchangable to allow for both variants!

Go go Necron Lord!

I had a lot of fun with this army, and the client is adding more to it next month, so this isn't the last you'll see of this army! Next up are more Imperial Knights, lots of Horus Heresy models, more Necrons, and, last but not least, everyone's favorite lord of the undead....

Stay tuned!

Howdy folks!

I was lucky enough to get a chance to work on the new Nagash model for a client! Finished him up a couple days ago, I'm a touch behind with posting pictures unfortunately! Speaking of which...

Nagash in all his glory! This model is huge, standing several inches taller than a Knight Titan! The base was done with some extra GW Zombie pieces, a gate from the Garden of Morr kit, and autumn leaves from Secret Weapon Miniatures.

The client allowed for some creative freedom while still sticking mostly to the official scheme. I wanted both shoulderpads to be bone, while I opted for a brighter green for the ethereal spirits.

He's incredibly imposing, and its best to leave him in pieces while painting. I did the robes first, then worked into Nagash himself. The head and book was done separate from that to allow work on his torso and arm armor.

The gate looks so tiny behind him!

Don't mess with the biggest and baddest lich in the Warhammer World!

I can't wait to work on another in the future, I think a warm scheme with reds and oranges would look incredible on a model like this!

Its starting to look like fall here in Colorado, so the rain (and snow?!) is starting to come. Shouldn't cause too many problems, but I've got a trio of Knight titans coming that need some primer! Lots of fun projects coming ahead, lets hope the weather doesn't get in the way!

Why hello again folks!

I have been really bad at updating the blog the last month or so! I've been incredibly busy, and its easier to update Facebook than to write up a post! I'll do a big backlog of stuff, but for now, I've got a group of Raven Guard vehicles!

The Land Raider is definitely not something you see in a lot of Raven Guard armies! Lots of weathering to break up the huge tracts of black and white on this guy, and freehanding and decals also help to add texture and detail to the surface.

Little raven is little!

The Mechanicum shoulderpad also breaks up the black and white!

The side guns are magnetized too for ultimate versatility!

Ah, this is more like the Raven Guard! The first Drop Pod! Again, weathered to break up the black and white, and the freehanded Raven and decals add interest to the surface.

All guns are magnetized too, albeit a little snuggly.

And number two!

The Raven Guard assault a Nurgle fortress!

The last picture is a hint at a project I've been working on lately too. I've never lived in an area where Armies on Parade was a viable idea...until now! Expect pictures after the event, but I've been chugging along on the board! Its nearly finished, just have to do some final touchups and figure out army placement!

Alrighty! I've got some back pictures to show off over the next week or so, as well as some projects on the table at the moment. October is going to be packed though with something, well, TITANIC!

Stay tuned!

10/3/14: Finished: Imperial Fists Pre-Heresy Felblade

Hey folks!

Next up on catching up on blogposts is a giant yellow tank! Client has a Pre-Heresy Imperial Fists army *drools* and wanted his Felblade done up as a centerpiece for it! We did some talking, and he wanted to break up the yellow, yet still keep it recognizable as an Imperial Fists vehicle. Enter weathering powders!

The beast in all her glory! I started by priming the model black, the spraying it brown, then dusting with white and grey. Black areas were masked off, then weathered with the rest of it.

I used a combination of dark brown, light brown, grey, orange, and black weathering powders on it, working mostly into crevices and front edges to show weathering and dirt coverage. Several coats of varnish were applied to keep the powder on the model.

The Fist is some leftover Brass etching I got from a commission a LONG time ago. You can also see, through the dust, the name 'Hammer of Dorn'. I tried to imitate the scrimshaw that the Imperial Fists become known for.

The decals are from the Baneblade transfer sheet and the blocky, Bauhaus-style font really works for the Imperial Fists.

I had a ton of fun with this model, I may have to do another one in the future sometime! Just need to find a Marine chapter I want to work on for a bit! Iron Hands? Crimson Fists? Rainbow Warriors? Oh help us!

Working on yet another Knight Titan at the moment, still waiting on the Reaver to fully arrive. Should be really interesting, I love huge Forge World models! Still need to show off the Nurgle Daemons too! Man, I really am behind!

10/7/14: Finished: The Fecund Host of the Plague Father Nurgle Daemons Army

Hey guys!

This has been a project months and months in the making. Back in April, before moving from Durango, I traded that old Ork army I'd had lying around for a group of beat up Nurgle CSM and Daemons. I've always wanted to play with the new Plaguebearers, so as soon as I saw 30 of them, I was super excited! Some additions, cleanup, conversions, and some love with a paintbrush, and they're now a rockin' group of daemons that'd make Papa Nurgle proud! This army was mainly an exercise in using the airbrush on smaller models and using washes to achieve sickly, rotting areas.

The Great Unclean One, the Warlord of the force. I hate GW's metal/resin blob, so I opted for the FW's Mamon model. Works so much better, plus the detail on him is amazing!

Dat Nurgle hottub!

The first of three Heralds. I'm missing a picture of the 3rd one, but he matches the one above. The one below was part of the original lot, hence the missing antlers and reclining Nurgling. It bothered me enough to pick up a third one!

The palanquins were simple conversions of cutting the top of 2 Nurgling bases flat and adding two wooden chits on top! Those were weathered and rusted quickly, and two rare earth magnets were added to them and the bases of the Heralds. Quick and easy!

Two groups of 20 Plaguebearers! Running these with a Plagueridden, Plague Banner, Instrument, with the Heralds attached. Heralds have the Locus of Fecundity, so they become a 21 man tarpit that can execute characters and eat their way through nearly any unit in the game!

A selection of the Plaguebearers so you can see detail.

Everyone needs Nurglings! Have another two bases waiting for finishing touches. These guys will be objective campers on the back of the board for sure.

Two Daemon Princes; both count as Nurgle with Wings, Armor, and Mastery Level 2 and a Greater Aetherblade. Both are repurposed from trades and old models, and the green one was done to tie in with the Nurgle Chaos Marines. Still works for the Daemons though!

My favorite units in the army are these bad boys. Picked up two boxes so I can run them as 2 groups of 3 or one big group. Nurgle needs a fast unit, and these guys definitely take the cake!

Some individual shots too! The wings are my favorite part, they just came out so nice!

By turning heads and limbs, you can get them an even greater look of movement!

Ah, the little Herald that comes with Mamon. I'm actually running this as a Beast of Nurgle.

He received the staff from Festus the Leechlord to add some height and interest to the back of the model!

And, because I couldn't resist, I had to pick up a Blight Drone. This guy painted up super quickly and looks great with the rest of the army! The huge tracts of rusted metal is a big contrast from the overly fleshy tone of the army. I'd love to pick up another one and make them a bigger unit, but we'll see!

And with some Plaguebearers for scale; this fellow is huge!

And last, but certainly not least, the Soul Grinder! This is the Forge World Plague Hulk model I'm using as a Soul Grinder, this guy provides the AA and vehicle killing power the army needs! Plus the model is amazing!

Gotta arm him with the Phlegm upgrade, it'd be foolish not to!

I also mounted him on a spare Valkyrie base for good measure and to keep the feet from chipping!

Don't have space for a full army shot yet, but I'm hoping to remedy that at some point! I had a lot of fun working on this army, and I'm currently working on an Armies on Parade board to show them off! I don't get to play 40k that often anymore, so we'll see what happens with the army after that! May hold onto them for the occasional game and display more than anything!

Alrighty! Back on track, October is gonna be packed with one HUGE, TITANIC model. I'd rather not spoil too much yet, but I'm very excited!

Stay tuned!

This is my entry for the upcoming Armies on Parade contest Games Workshop holds every year! Got it done early as an upcoming commission is going to eat all of my time until the event. Enjoy the pictures (and my dining room set) and be sure to leave a comment below!

I present 'Welcome to Fort Hope'!

The access to the LED switches is magnetized for easy concealment and access.

And the board with the completed army!

Had a lot of fun with this project, and I'm already constructing some new ideas for next year. Scion kill team, methinks?

Anyways, I have a big project start to show off on Tuesday, so stay tuned!

Howdy folks!

Got a very exciting commission to show off this time! Client wanted his new Reaver Titan done in Legio Metalica colors with some Mechanicus constructs wandering about the battlefield on his base. He also needed him for a game on the 25th, so I had to kick on the burners and get this bad boy done in a week! Pretty good for the timeframe, methinks!

Client got two Laser Blasters, a Gatling Blaster, and the Apocalypse Missile Launcher arms. They're all magnetized for any loadout!

The Thallax at his feet is magnetized, in case the client wants to use him instead of leave him as base decor.

My favorite part is the carapace, the heraldry with the name turned out perfect, if I do say so myself!

Yeah, doesn't look so intimidating now. The flight stand doesn't even come up to his knee!

And his foot is the size of a Rhino!

Lots of fun with the freehand on this one!

Now, just remember, when you're having a bad day, you could be wired into the ceiling of a titanic walker!

I wish I could have had more time to work on this guy, but deadlines are deadlines sometimes! Taking a day or two to rest my brain, then its back to work! Armies on Parade is this Saturday, and I have some minor touchups to do on the Chaos Marines, but next on the table is some Warmachine and some Salamander Space Marines!

Stay tuned!

Howdy folks!

Two...three...carry the one...now a six...three weeks?! It's been almost three weeks since I had a post up here! Holy crap! That's no good! Sorry for being quiet on this front folks, Facebook and Twitter are just easier to keep up with regularly for me!

Have I been busy? You betcha! After the Reaver Titan....

My Armies on Parade display won Gold at Games Workshop: Square One store!

Two waves of Warmachine solo add-ons! Really happy with the High Reclaimer, and I was surprised at how enjoyable Master Holt ended up being to paint!

Finally had a chance to work on one of Forge World's amazing primarch models! Should be working on more of them soon!

Birdhouses make excellent bases for some quick and easy terrain!

A Charity Knight Titan benefiting my friends running an event for Toys for Tots!

And I've even found time to start a new army!

I'll be running blogposts on each of these projects for the next couple days, so be sure to stay tuned! Got a lot coming down the pipe too, so keep checking back here, and keep an eye on our Facebook Page and be sure to follow us on Twitter at @SLWargaming!

Hey folks!

This time around, I've got a splattering of Warmachine models to show off! Done in two waves for the same client, it was a lot of fun playing with different colors and tying everything into the desert bases. Lets work through this in waves, shall we?

Wave One consisted of Lady Aiyana and Master Holt, Saxon Orrik, and Eiryss!

Wave two was Taryn and the High Reclaimer of Menoth. The High Reclaimer is a ton of fun to work on!

Very happy with the glow from the staff!

I really enjoy quick commissions like this, since they're quick and have a lot of variety to them! There's a lot of models in Privateer Press' range that I may pick up just to paint at some point. So many projects, so little time!

Praise be to the Omnissiah!

Another Knight Titan under my belt, but this one is particularly special for me! For the last three years, I've done charity models for my friends over at Table Top War. They're based out of SoCal, and every year, they've run some sort of event for charity. You can see the last year's project HERE; the pictures aren't great, but hey!

This year, though, they came to me asking if I could do a Space Hulk set for them. Time constraints and prior commitments kept that from working, so instead I offered to do a Knight Titan they could raffle off for their event. They loved the idea and, soon after, the kit arrived! I set to work, and here's the final result!

The beasty in all its glory! I switched the weapon arms around to make him stand out even more, and the guns are magnetized!

The Toys for Tots logo was freehanded on the shoulderpad, tilting plate, banner, and leg guard. The red stripe across the carapace is also an homage to the color scheme they use for their promotional

The Toys for Tots Knight defends an Imperial city with support from the Imperial Fists 1st Company.

For those of you living in the SoCal area, information about the event can be found HERE; if you're in the area, this is a great cause, they're running 40k and Warmachine, and hey, you could end up walking away with this bad boy!

11/16/14: Finished: Vulkan, Primarch of the Salamanders

For the God-Emperor!

I've loved Forge World's Primarch models; personally I'm waiting for Rogal Dorn, but I love Horus and Angron so far, and the other ones are still beautiful models. That's why, when I got the chance to work on Vulkan, I jumped on the project!

And, let me tell you, he's a beast!

The model is three major pieces; Vulkan on a 40mm base, the 60mm scenic base, and a pillar piece that conceals the back of the 40mm base on the scenic base.

Vulkan is DRIPPING with detail! I opted for a redish maroon leather color to compliment the green, and I did most of the details in either bone or brass; only the shoulderpad got a painted flame instead.

I love working on skintones and faces, and his is beautiful. Forge World's detail is mind-blowing!

Vulkan wears that cloak so well!

And, for those of you interested, here's a scale shot next to one of my Assault Terminators. Even Terminators look tiny next to him!

And the scenic base! I wanted to have two fallen Salamanders on the base, rather than traitor marines, to give the scene a sense of danger and urgency, like Vulkan is stepping down to save his children.

Lots of weathering powder give everything a dusty, urban grit feel!

I can't wait to work on more Primarchs, I've got a Horus coming soon, and I'm in talk about another primarch, so stay tuned for more!

11/17/14: Terrain Tutorial: From Birdhouse to Burg!

This city, is my city, and I love it! Yeah I love it!

Patrick Stump aside, howdy folks!

Just a fun little project to show off! With my new studio, I've been wanting to add a table for gaming and pictures to give commissions that extra edge. Putting around online, I came across TerrainThralls, who have a lot of nicely done scratchbuilt terrain tutorials and pictures. The one that really stuck with me, though, is from Rob Hawkins. He did a lot of Games Workshop's and Privateer Press' huge terrain tables, so I really watch his stuff for tricks and tips.

The basis of this project is a wooden birdhouse, some plasticard, extra bits, and a little paint!

MATERIALS

  • 1 Wooden Birdhouse (Mine is from Michaels and cost all of $5.
  • Various sheet styrene (thick stripping and wood texture are ideal)
  • Cardboard
  • Vallejo Oxid Paste (Though simple spackling could probably work too)
  • Various Warhammer Fantasy and 40k bits

A quick walkthrough on this one! I popped the windows off, the door off, and removed the hole at the top for the bird to enter. A WHFB fortress door was added to cover the door, a plastic brick wall was added at the bottom to add detail, and the attic hole was covered with a plastic Orc shield. The shingles are done with cardboard strips, and were angled as they went up to give a drooping, pointed look. Also, you can see the scale is perfect for 28mm tabletop gaming!

The windows are textured plasticard, while the hinges on the windows are little bits of plastic tubing added to the sides. The trim of the house is plastic stripping; while not necessary, they help add wall detail and texture. The walls were covered in a thin layer of Vallejo's Oxid Paste. Its decently thin and sandy, which gives everything a spackled texture.

I also picked up a second one while I was out. All you really want these for are the shape; all the texture and detail is added by you. I also added a gutter to the smaller one, you can see it towards the middle of the picture.

Painting took less than an hour! I primed it grey, then sprayed the walls with Vallejo Model Air Ivory. The roof was sprayed with blues and greys, though it's up to you what color you spray them. The windows were brushed the same color as the roof, then were sponged with Ivory to give them a chippled, battered look. I also used weathering powders to created grime and dust on the walls and windows.

The gutter was painted with Leadbelcher, then washed with Agrax Earthshade. A touch of Athonian Camoshade was added at the base to add detail. The posters were found on Google; I wanted to keep these fairly generic, so there's a mix of Mordheim and 40k posters. These were printed, cut out, tattered, then glued to the wall using white glue. When dry, I hit them with weathering powders and washes.
Note: Mordheim posters from Cianty's Tabletop Wargaming; this site is amazing for terrain ideas, as well as general gaming info!

Even as a backdrop for 40k, they look excellent, and the big one isn't even finished yet!

I hope you guys find this helpful, this would work perfect for Mordheim, 40k, Fantasy (especially Blood on the Streets), Malifaux, or Wild West Exodus. Now, go to your local crafts store and start buying birdhouses!

Howdy folks!

It's been a busy week! This time, we've got a couple of Knight Titans and some additional Warhound arms! For those of you who don't know, this is an add-on to a series of commissions I completed in May and in August. I've included pictures of these commissions at the end! Anyways, you're here for pictures! So....

The Questoris Knight Magaera was a ton of fun to work on and is easily my favorite model in the group!

Keeping with the Three Musketeers theme across them! Thank you Sparknotes!

The Flamer on the Achaeron is a monster! I opted for more hazard stripes and more black on the base and soot weathering to make him look like he's been doing some BBQing!

'A Champion on Armageddon, Planchet regularly accompanied clean-up squads and cityfighting. His kill-banner records the death of two Stompas, Gaze of Gork and Da Krumper, as well as quintet of Morkanauts and Gorkanauts.'

More Warhound arms! The client now has 2 Plasma Blastguns, 2 Turbo Laser Destructors, a Vulkan Megabolter, and the Inferno Cannon!

And, to put everything in context, here's the rest of his army!

I believe this puts the Smells Like Knight Titans counter over 20 now! Like our work? Have a Knight (or anything for that matter) that needs some painting TLC? Drop us an email at SmellsLikeWargaming at Hotmail dot com, and we'll get you on your way!

Next up is an army of Tempestus Scions, as well as another Primarch!

Stay tuned!

You bear that Word Lorgar!

Hey guys! This was commissioned by a previous client hoping to get his buddy into playing 30k with them. I would certainly hope this model will get him building a Word Bearers army in no time!

I love the character that Forge World puts into the faces of their models, and the Horus Heresy line is no exception!

The back comes off to allow you to remove the model from the scenic base.

And scale next to an Astra Militarum Commissar; he's no Vulkan, but he's still massive!

Loving working on the Primarchs! You can see the Vulkan I finished recently HERE! Can't wait to do more of them, personally waiting for Rogal Dorn, but I may have to pick up Horus....

Don't forget that if you've got a Primarch (or anything, for that matter) that needs the SLW touch, to drop us an email at SmellsLikeWargaming at hotmail dot com, or drop us a message on our Facebook or our Twitter! Currently running $100 Primarch commissions, which includes everything to get him ready for the battlefield!

Currently have an army of Lambdan Lion Scions marching across the paint desk, but after that should be more Warmachine and Necrons! Also been working on my new scenic displays/gaming boards, so I'll try and get pictures of that soon!
