6/16/15: Showcase: For Sale House Hawkshroud Knight Castigator

Howdy folks!

As promised, the second Knight to show off is a Knight Castigator, done in House Hawkshroud heraldry and rocked out in a dynamic pose like it's ripping through enemy lines!

I came into this model through various means and knew it needed some yellow! The various decals on the kit came from Eldar, Baneblade, and Imperial Knight transfer sheets and really helps with the heraldic theme!

I still need to try him on the tabletop, but this model is already up for sale on eBay! You can find the auction link HERE!

I've been doing a little spring cleaning here in the studio, so tomorrow's showcase is another super heavy ready to hit a battlefield near you! Stay tuned, it's back to Dark Eldar with me!

Howdy folks!

Super late night post! Our latest commission was a very interesting one; 16 grotesques converted from Island of Blood Rat Ogres! Client wanted a very standard scheme with red rather than the blue green you normally see, resin bases done to look like toxic sludge, and some extra detail on the sergeants.

There's lots of little details in this army, from warpstone chunks and infected skin, to blood and sinew effects and even tattoos! The Sergeants also have trophies from the client's most common opponents; orks, tau, and space wolves.

Glad to have them finished! Next up is a couple Blood Bowl teams and some Drop Pods! Also, I keep forgetting to post up pictures of my current personal army, so expect shots of that soon!

Howdy folks!

Getting my Blogger game back on track! Will hopefully keep this pace going from now on, this is just as important as Facebook and Instagram!

This was a fun little repaint project I got a sudden urge to work on one night. I'd wanted to test out some basic camo effects with the airbrush, but painter's tape doesn't get that nice organic shape and I didn't have any masking putty. Cue a 1 AM run to our local grocery store for play doh! Worked the charm I'd say, and allowed me to focus on decal work and basic weathering. I also pulled an old Forge World Chimera Tank commander model out of my bits box and got him in the hatch!

As you can see by the title, this model is for sale; you can find the eBay auction HERE! As much as I want to do a Tank heavy Guard army at the moment, I've got too many projects as it is, so this guy is on the chopping block!

Up next is some Blood Bowl teams, as well as some work on my personal Imperial Fists army! Trying to get that Strike Force Ultra formation going....

Howdy folks!

Sorry for the lack of posts, I got a wonderful summer illness that threw a whole bunch of delays in my plans! I'm also working on a set of blood Bowl teams at the moment, but I figured I'd break them up with a mini project! A buddy of mine picked it up for me to paint as part of a trade we did. I always love working on some Forge World vehicles, so I happily obliged!

All weapon options are magnetized, from the heavy bolter/Lascannon sponsons, to the 4 turret choices. I personally love the look of the Plasma Executioner, couple it with 2 Lascannon shots and you've got overkill written all over it! The hatch also comes off to allow for Sergeant Chronus, who I'll be wrapping up for the tank in a bit! Such a lovely kit, even if Predators are hard to justify these days! The last picture shoes it's current state, which is immolating cultists in the fury of a dying sun!

As I said next up is two Blood Bowl teams, I'm very excited to show these off! After that is Drop Pods, Iron Hands, and Infinity! OH MY!

Howdy folks!

This time around we have a duo of Blood Bowl teams done, dusted, and ready for the pitch! Really enjoyed this commission, especially the Lizardmen as I own the models myself and really want to get mine painted now! Let's walk through the teams.

First is the Lizardmen. The models come from Impact Miniatures, and are gorgeous little models, especially the Skinks! Consisting off 8 skinks, 6 saurus, and are Kroxigor, this is are team to be reckoned with! The client wanted the team themed around Texas A&M, which is a great compliment to the green of the alligators.  I've only had a chance to play with them on the computer, but Lizardmen are a brutal team to play. The skinks rival the Elves in terms of speed and agility, while the saurus and Kroxigor give them the hitting ability of orcs! Look out for them!

The Pro Elves come from Willy Miniatures I believe, and the team consists of 8 blockers, 2 catchers, 2 throwers, and 2 Wardancers. This team was themed around Keanu Reeve's movie the Replacements, and the colors flow really nicely. Elves were always the bane of my Orcland Raiders due to their speed, and this team should be no exception!

Whew! Loved working on this commission, but it's time to get back to the Grimdark future of the 41st Millennium! Next up is a detachment of Salamanders Drop Pods, followed by the sons of Ferrus Mannus!

Howdy folks!

Close on the heels of the new Space Marines codex comes a couple weeks of Space Marines commissions!

First off is a set of Drop Pods for a Salamanders army! These kits look so good when they're all done up, it's a shame they're such a bitch to put together! These guys were done to match a client's existing Drop Pod with some artistic tweaks on my end.

The green washed out a little in the pictures, but the blending turned out really nicely with the airbrush!

I opted for a little more weathering, especially on the inside of the doors, as well as decals and the chevrons on the inside of a couple sets of doors.

Unfortunately I don't have any Salamanders in the studio, so the Imperial Fists took the pods for a test spin! Looking good boys!

Next up is 1850 of Iron Hands, complete with plenty of Techmarines and Dreadnoughts!

Stay tuned!

7/21/15: Showcase: Clan Raukaan Iron Hands Army Commission!

Howdy folks!

Its been a busy two weeks here in the studio! Picked up some new furniture and did some shuffling, but those pictures are for a different time! Most of that time was spent getting this Iron Hands commission completed!

This project consisted of:

  • 4 Techmarines
  • 2 Servitors
  • 22 Tactical Marines
  • 2 Rhinos/Razorbacks
  • Vindicator
  • Stalker
  • Land Raider Achilles
  • Thunderfire Cannon
  • 2 Ironclad Dreadnoughts
  • Iron Hands Knight Titan
Enough talk though....

The complete army! This army will be getting larger soon as well, believe the client has another 2k worth of Marines, as well as an Inquisitor, to add to the force!

Rhino/Razorback #1

Rhino/Razorback #2

Tactical Squad #1; both squads have both a Meltagun and Flamer Marine for flexibility.

Tactical Squad #2

The Land Raider Achilles, such a badass model! All 3 hatch options are magnetized for flexibility!

The duo of Ironclad Dreadnoughts 'Deimos' and 'Phobos'; as you can see both arms are interchangable, and the Hunter-Killer Missiles on top are magnetized!

Iron Hands Vindicator; as always, that Siege Shield just screams out for hazard striping!

The Thunderfire Cannon and his Techmarine Crew. Love this model, its super simple but always turns out so nicely!

A Clash of eras! Left is the Finecast Techmarine, while right is the old pewter one. While the sculpt on the left is nicer, Finecast has not been nice to this model. I haven't seen one without its share of errors!

A duo of servitors, perfect for extra wounds and getting that 3+ Repair roll!

The head honcho Techmarine! The client wanted the hatch storm shield for him, and I opted for a blue glow power Axe for this one to make him more imposing and eye catching on the tabletop!

And the centerpiece to the force, a Knight Titan themed to the rest of the army! All carapace weapons are magnetized, and the stubber has been left unattached at the clients discretion. I opted for plenty of black and white, as well as the yellow chevrons to catch the eye and break up all that black!

Clan Raukaan's armored company moves past wreckage from the Imperial Fists.

Hold your ground! Tactical Marines and Techmarines secure supply containers under heavy fire!

Techmarines hold the line between the enemy and their big guns!

What an interesting army to work on! I've never done a black army like this, so it was interesting breaking up the black with the sponge weathering and weathering powders. I learned a lot from this project, and I'm excited for the next wave of them!

Don't forget! If you're looking to get your models painted, from a single figure, to an army, to your massive titans and war machines, you can drop us an email at SmellsLikeWargaming@hotmail dot com, and we'll get you a quote!

Next up is some Infinity models, followed by a mishmash of other models and pieces. September sees something massive moving into the studio, you wont want to miss it!

Thanks!

Howdy folks!

Its been busy here in the studio the past couple weeks! I'm behind on uploading stuff here to the blog but if you've been keeping up on the Facebook page you've seen Infinity and my Imperial Fists go up!

Here's the latest commission we completed; a trio of Ork Mek Gunz, full of gubbinz and extra bitz to really make them pop!

The Mek Gunz, deployed and ready to cause havoc in Imperial lines! The one on the far left is the client's original one, and the reference to match the other 3 to!

What's Mek Gunz without some crew! For pricing sake, the client only wanted 5 of them done. Very characterful, lovely models!

The extra detail! All 3 gunz got an old arcade cabinet look on the back monitors for extra detail! This one's got Galaga!

While this one is rocking the Mario Bros!

And my personal favorite, PacMan!

I'm very pleased with how these turned out, as is the client! Would love to do more at some point, I always wanted an all grot ork army.....hmmmmm....
Next up is Blood Bowl and some one off pieces. The rest of the month sees Space Wolves, Eldar, Roboute Guilliman, and a couple other projects cross the table. September sees....well you'll just have to wait!

Holy smokes!

Sorry for the lack of posts the last two months! Smells Like Wargaming is still chugging away, some computer issues and ease of use caused the blog here to slip to the bottom of the pile! I've got a backlog of stuff to show off, but this time, we've got the big kahuna himself!

Taking three weeks from cleaning to completion, this model was easily the biggest and my favorite model I've ever completed! I'll let the photos speak for me though!

What a beast! I'd love to work on another one, or even a Warhound or Reaver! If you're looking to get your titan painted, or army, for that matter, drop me an email at SmellsLikeWargaming at Hotmail dot com, and we'll get you sorted!

I'll be catching up on posts this weekend, but I'll be on a short vacation towards the end of the week for a much needed rest! Next up is White Scars, Mechanicum, and some big big tanks!

Hey folks!

The first of several posts catching up on the backlog of unshared projects is everyone's favorite Smurf papa, Roboute Guilliman!

An absolute blast to work on, this model allowed for a lot of different techniques and really made for some fun painting!

Oh no! I just realized I never got good pictures of the banners! The banners were left off the model for shipping purposes, as this bad boy went off to Australia and we didn't want any damage! I'd love to go back and play with the marbling more. Such is hindsight!

Don't let your Primarchs hit the table without the paint they deserve! Smells Like Wargaming is always happy to paint up these bad boys; just drop us an email at SmellsLikeWargaming at hotmail dot com, and we'll discuss getting yours done and ready to crusade!

Dear Logan Grimnar,
We are pleased to inform you that you've been accepted at ++Transmission Lost++

Hey folks!

Another in our catching up posts was a very quick and fun little commission that links to one done earlier this year. The Space Wolves were done for the initial client, while the Wraithknight was done for his wife, who wants a Harry Potter themed Eldar army. We discussed color, and opted for a bright purple complimented with red gems and black accents. The central gem also got a red phoenix to represent Fawkes, Dumbledore's ever-lasting phoenix!

I love working with colors I don't normally use, so the Wraithknight was a great endeavour with that. The galaxy in the faceplate turned out much better than planned as well!

Hey folks!

Sometimes, when working on something giant, you gotta take a step back and work on something a little smaller!

I picked this guy up while working on the Warlord Titan to keep me fresh and let me play with my new airbrush a little bit. It also let me play with my new Micron pens I picked up for such an occasion!

Such a lovely model, from the sunken, sallow face, to the stark blues and the weathered golds. Currently asking $90 OBO for him, with free shipping within the US! If interested in adding this bad boy to your army, please drop me an email at SmellsLikeWargaming at Hotmail dot com, and we'll get something worked out!

Hey folks!

Phew! I'm caught up! Holy guacamole! And this last one is a doozy!

This commission consisted of two separate teams; a Halfling team, consisting of GW halflings and Willy Miniatures Treemen, and an Orc team, all pewter, and all very stylish! Lets go through each team individually!

The Halflings, consisting of 2 Treemen, Deeproot Strongbranch, a Halfling Griff Oberwald, and enough halflings to darken the skies over the pitch! Griff didn't photograph very well, but the client wanted him to resemble Griff by adding a chicken to his helmet, rather than the eagle the old model has!

The other team here is one near and dear to my heart! I learned Blood Bowl with an orc team, so I was excited to work on another one! The team, Goldtoof's Fancy Ladz, got their choice of colors and warpaint after rampaging through a Bretonnian brothel while playing a pickup game! The team consists of a troll, a thrower, 4 Black Orcs, 4 Blitzers, and a handful of linemen for backup!

I really miss playing the tabletop game, I should find a league nearby and get my Sarcos team painted! We'd love to get your team tabletop ready too! Drop us an email at SmellsLikeWargaming at Hotmail dot com and we'll get you a team that'd make Nuffel proud!

Howdy folks!

Its been a full week since I got back from my mini-vacation, and I've already been nose-deep in painting projects! This commission is an add-on to Guilliman and a set of vehicles I've completed over the course of the year!

The gang's all here!

The first chunk is a 10 man Suzerain squad. Client wanted 2 Thunderhammers, as well as a banner to go with the squad. These guys are going to be scary rolling out of their transport alongside the primarch!

A simple freehand banner, based on the 40k Ultramarines 2nd Company one. The basic shapes were drawn in with a Micron pen, then it was all colored in from there!

Three Thud Mortars; these models would make great alternative Thunderfire Cannons as well!

Ultramarines artillery rain death down upon the lines of traitor Militarum! For the 500 Worlds!

This is a super busy month guys! Lots of White Scars due towards the end of the month, and a couple of one-off fun projects to keep my brain from melting under all that white!

Stay tuned!

"This day, we dedicate our lives to the masters.
This day, we dedicate our deaths to their cause.
This day, we dedicate our souls to the eternal glory of the abyss.
This day, we rise!"
-Mariak Soth, Invokator of the Cult of the Exquisite Corpse

Greetings warriors of the abyss! After selling my personal Imperial Fists army, I knew I had to jump into a project I'd been dying to work on for years and years! I've always been a fan of the Imperial Guard. Lots of tanks, massed infantry, the order system, everything just had a narrative feel to it. I'm a total sucker for the Gaunt's Ghosts books for that reason! My first army was Imperial Guard, and I knew it was time to redo that army with the skills and tricks I've acquired over the last five years of painting. This time, though, they took on a darker side....

The Renegade Command Squad, led by the brutal tyrant Ornifex Zaan, on left. Not shown is the standard bearer, who still needs to get his standard painted!

Doubling as either a Company Commander or an Arch-Demagogue, Zaan here is a brutal looking miniature, and reminds me a lot of the ghouls from Fallout! His adjunctant is the limited edition Warlord Princeps from Forge World, and is used as a Regimental Advisor. I also have the limited edition Navigator to work as an Astropath.

The Rogue Psyker Tru'ul; I opted for a sickly, pallid flesh tone to really give him a corpse-like look. Even the decapitated psyker head at his belt looks more lively than he does! He works as a Rogue Psyker or a Primaris Psyker, depending on the ruleset.

Last time I did Guard, there were no plastic Ogryn! If you're not running ogryn, you're missing out on a fun, hard-hitting unit! I also have another box that will become standard Ogryn, and both units will get a Taurox to ride around in.

The big centerpiece unit for the army is a renegade Malcador! While I love the model, its actually smaller than I expected, and I question its Superheavy status! Opted for 3 Lascannons and the Battle Cannon for extra armor destroying goodness!

Plenty of heretical runes and glyphs adorn the tank!

'Hail Zaan and his glorious new regime!"

The renegade brass etch is wonderful, and really adds that extra detail to the tanks. The Malcador comes with both Imperial and Renegade crew, and I'm sure the Imperial one will end up in a commission project very soon!

Side shot of the command chimera. Lots of weathering, lots of dust and grit. When the army's done I'll show off more angles.

Side shot of the Platoon command's chimera.

The first Taurox; while I can't run them in the Renegades list in IA13, these are great little transports for Veterans and Ogryn in the standard codex!

And what would a Guard army be without some Leman Russ! I have a second one that required a lot of cleanup and conversion work, and the goal overall is to add a third armed with a Demolisher Cannon!

On the workbench I've got 30 Infantry, as well as some heavy weapons teams, 30 Veterans (I'll be using renegade Death Korps for them) as well as some enforcers and a Platoon command. I'm booked until mid 2016 though, so we'll see when the next update on them is!

10/20/15: Showcase: Bones Weapon Lockers Studio Terrain

Look, I don't need to tell you the Reaper Bones line is amazing. "Reaper's entire line in plastic AND cheap?! Count me in!" While putting around the FLGS, I noticed that they'd turned some of their terrain pieces into plastic as well. Seeing that said piece was only $3, I immediately picked it up, got home, and ordered two more!

These paint up super quick, and work great for any game, from 40k to Warmachine, Malifaux, and Infinity!

As you can see, they're big enough to hide a couple models behind, and stacking them creates a great defensive wall!

And the finished product! They were basecoated silver, washed, and allowed to dry. Once dry, a thin coat of hairspray was applied to the boxes. Once that was dry, they were airbrushed with their chosen color. I opted for primary colors for simplicity. Once the paint dried, some warm water was applied and the hairspray was rubbed off using a stiff-bristled brush. The water activates the hairspray, causing it and the paint to wash away. Once dry, a little sponging was done along the edges, they were matte varnished,  and stencils were applied using the same hairspray technique.

White Scars Jetbikes cruise past an ammo dump in pursuit of their quarry!

I'm a sucker for scatter terrain, especially since I like to take my cinematic pictures like the one above. One of my goals for the studio is a Zone Mortalis table, so I'll definitely be picking more of these up! As you can see from the final picture there, our White Scars commission is way on its way; at the moment, we've got 2 Stormtalon, 6 Razorbacks, 3 Drop Pods, a Techmarine, an Ironclad Dreadnought, and the bikers here completed. There's still 50 infantry, as well as some bikers and some other odds and ends. Will be done Tuesday, so my work is cut out for me!

"Surround yourself with the greatest warriors at your command, or cower in the deepest and darkest hole you can find. It matters not. I shall take your head for the Great Khan and for the Emperor." -Kor'sarro Khan

Another White Scars commission down and dusted! This is wave two for a commission I completed earlier this year, and total I've done almost 6k points of White Scars in 2015!

The army all together!

A command Squad on foot

Can't go wrong with a squad of Scimitar Jetbikes! All their weapons are magnetized as well!

The Reclusiam Chaplain and a Rune Priest on bike! Absolutely love that Chaplain model, wish they'd release it in a clampack!

And who doesn't love a Librarius Conclave on bike?! Plenty of kitbashing here, and I opted for various force weapons for added versatility!

The first three Razorbacks! The Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer turrets are from a 3rd Party company whose name escapes me at the moment!

The other three Razorbacks!

Razorbacks aren't your thing? Deploy in a stylish Drop Pod! As finicky as these kits are, I absolutely love how they look all finished!

A Stormraven duo! All weapons are magnetized as swappable as well!

And a duo of Land Speeder Storms! I tried to keep the iconography and marking style consistent across both types of flying models, as it keeps them looking cohesive!

We changed up the crew in the second one, and I did a little digging in my bits box for some variant looks!

2 Combat Squads of Tactical Marines, perfect for extra models in a unit or getting to your Demi-Company!

The first squad of Scouts; these were converted from the Land Speeder Storm passengers and some spare pieces I had in my bits box!

And sniper scouts! I opted for a dirty, dingy look for them to make them look like they've been out in the field for quite some time!

Grav-Cannon Devastator Squad!

Multi-Melta Devastator Squad!

Lascannon Devastator Squad!

Even the White Scars need an Ironclad now and again! Such a lovely model!

White Scars techmarine with servitors!

And lastly, 5 White Scars marines; these were done as a Hurricane Bolter replacement for a conversion the client is doing, hence why the squad is angled downward!

Despite all this white, I had a blast working on this commission! I love seeing a giant project like this come together, its one reason I love my job! Time to catch up on some sleep though, I've been burning the candle at both ends and its starting to catch up with me!

Next up is a couple quick vehicle commissions, followed by Necrons, Lizardmen, Execution Force, and Tau! Some personal projects in the pipeline as well, so stay tuned!

Howdy folks!

This is easily my worst period without a post over here! Those of you who follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram know that I haven't been away from the brush, but my blog here has suffered. My computer crapped out on me late last year and I haven't been a fan of Blogspot on my phone, so the blog here has suffered!

I'm hoping to fix that this year, though I've been bad about it for the first 3 weeks of 2016! Here's a look at some of our latest projects before I neglected the blog!

A Saim-Hann group that'd make even the Bonesingers of Iyanden jealous!

Taking a stroll into the Horus Heresy with a Death Guard Praetor, his bodyguard, and their ride!

The start to my Adepticon Combat Patrol army. Only 17 models total, but its nice to play with some new techniques! All the bases are scratchbuilt as well!

Running a test scheme for a future for sale project of Space Marines. Despite the colors, I'm really enjoying them, and they should be very eye catching when done! Hoping for a full Battle Company!

Necron Deathmarks sneak up on Astartes Librarians! Part of a huge mish-mash commission completed in November!

And our most recent commission, consisting of 3 Crimson Hunters, 2 Warp Hunters, and 2 Hornets, all done in a variant Iyanden scheme. Client loved the flame effect on the Warlord Titan, so we opted to do it across all these vehicles!

I'm hoping to keep up better on the blog, at least 2 posts a week, but in case I slip, you can follow us on FACEBOOKTWITTER, and Instagram (@SmellsLikeWargaming) and keep up with all our projects! I'm currently booked through July with some amazing projects coming up, as well as a trip to Adepticon in March, so its going to be a busy year!
